The Institute of Caribbean Studies and the Centre for Caribbean Thought, in association with the Guild of Students, UWI, Mona and the Africana Studies Department, Brown University, will convene a conference from October 16-18, 2008 at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica, to mark the 40th anniversary of the October 16, 1968 student protests resulting from the expulsion of Walter Rodney.

The conference begins with an opening ceremony at 6pm on Thursday, October 16, 2008 in the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona. This same evening, the 10th Annual Walter Rodney Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Patricia Rodney, Professor, Department of Community Health & Preventive
Medicine & Director, Master of Public Health Program, National Center for Primary Care at Morehouse School of Medicine, and Walter Rodneys widow. Professor Rodney’s lecture will be under the theme Reflections on Walter Rodney, My Personal, Political and Professional Journey .
Other members of the Rodney family will also speak at the conference.

The Walter Rodney Conference continues with two stimulating days of discussions, debates, films and other activities. It closes with a bang on Saturday night with a grand retro dance “Eras: Reunion at the Union” at the Students Union. ( Music by Code Red with Guest Selectors
